Island School Will Collect 7.1 Mills; Holstrom Hired as Aide
      Mackinac Island Public School's millage rate was set at 7.1 mills, a paraprofessional aide was hired, and a drivers education class was discussed at the school board meeting Thursday, August 19. In May 2009, residents voted to allow levying of up to 7.4 mills to June 30, 2013. The board chose not to levy to the full 7.4 mills.

Noise From Party Tent Prompts City, Inn Meeting
      Music coming from a seasonal tent at the Inn at Stonecliffe has become louder since the outdoor structure was approved by the Planning Commission in 2006, say neighbors, and now the Street Committee wants to meet with the property's general manager, Jeff Patton.

Group of Mackinac Island Music Festival Artists Shares Michigan Roots
      Artists played unplugged sets and rocked out at the Pink Pony and other Island venues at the sixth annual Mackinac Island Music Festival Tuesday, August 17, through Thursday, August 19. There was comedy at Mission Point, and guitars and violins playing during a sunset performance at Stonecliffe.

Local Bat Found To Be Infected With Rabies
      A rabid bat found on Mackinac Island last week and another discovered in Cedarville in late July do not indicate a rise in the disease among area bats, but district health officials are cautioning people to be careful around the animals and to get tested for rabies if bitten or if a bat is found in a bedroom while a person has been sleeping.

Daytime Closures Set for Airport
      The Mackinac Island Airport will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, September 13, through Friday, September 17. Contractors will be making repairs to the runway. The runway will be open before and after those hours each day and on the weekend. If the tarmac requires additional work, it will be scheduled to begin Monday, September 20.

Skutt, North Feat Raises $800+
      More than $800 was raised for the St. Ignace fireworks fund and the oncology department at Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace Saturday, August 21, when Mike North, on water skis, and Craig Skutt, on an inflatable tube, were pulled behind a Star Line ferry, taking donations for a fundraiser. Leaving St. Ignace, their destination was Mackinac Island.

Rendezvous Powwow This Weekend
      Featuring authentic Native American dancing to the beats of several drum groups, historical reenactments from the French fur trading days, and numerous vendors selling an array of traditional wares and food, the fourth annual Rendezvous at the Straits Powwow is slated for Saturday, August 28, and Sunday, August 29, at the Father Marquette National Memorial in St. Ignace.
