Second-year coach Ryan Fox will have six players returning as the Mackinac Island Lakers defend their Northern Lights League (NLL) hoops title.

"We lost three outstanding players with leaderships skills in Josh Carley, Richard Chambers, and Gavin Webster, and they are going to be hard to replace," said Coach Fox.

This year’s three captains will be asked to be the leaders for the 2004-05 Lakers squad. They are senior Richard Chaffee, a 6’ 2” forward/center, and juniors Jason Pettit, a 6’ 4” center, and Ben Mosley, a 5’ 9” guard.

Three other returnees are junior Sam Kamphuis, a 5’ 11” forward/guard, and freshmen Woody Beardsley, a 6’ forward, and Riley Chaffee, a 6’2” forward/center, while first-year varsity players are eighth graders Robert Chambers and Michael Gamble, both 5’ 7” guards.

"This team has worked hard and is ready to play,” said Coach Fox. “The experience and rebounding will be the keys to our season. We want to play an up-tempo, fast-break style of basketball and we must rebound to make that successful.”

Mackinac Island NLL games will include Beaver Island, Hannahville, Grand Marais, Paradise, and Munising Baptist. The Friday games will count toward league standings while the Saturday match-ups will be non-conference contests.

Mr. Fox is the Mackinac Island Public School athletic director and physical education teacher. He and his wife, Jessica, own the La Isla Imports and Art in the Horse Corral Mall on Main Street.
