Smith Named Rec Volunteer of the Year

Candice Smith had no idea when she attended the city council meeting Wednesday, December 8, that she would be named the 2004 City Recreation Volunteer of the Year and receive a standing ovation from city officials and the audience.

During the award, Mayor Margaret Doud recognized her many accomplishments and contributions to the community.

Ms. Smith, with her late father, Ty Horn, organized and administered weekly Lions Club bingo games at the Community Hall and continued the club’s activity after her father passed away. She is involved with many fundraisers for the school, raising money for the Stella King Memorial Scholarship and the sports boosters, and also has become coordinator of the Lilac Queen and court program for the annual Lilac Festival, which now includes new official duties for the queen, such as opening the gates to Fort Mackinac for the summer season.

She is also active in many church and community functions and dinners.

“By quietly feeding the small creatures of our Island woodlands,” reads the city resolution, “she extends the definition of community, and by these and many other acts, she exemplifies the meaning of Community Service, and Candy epitomizes what a true ‘Islander’ is.”

Ms. Smith has two daughters, Vanessa and Pollyanna, and one son, Kirk. She is the owner and operator of Ty and Ling’s in the Mission and Harrisonville General Store on Cadotte Avenue in the Village.
