Stop Sign To Be Placed for Snowmobiles For the first time, a stop sign will be placed at the corner of Market Street and Cadotte Avenue this winter to slow snowmobile traffic down at what police call a blind corner. Police Chief Bill Lenaghan, at the City Council meeting Wednesday, December 8, said snowmobilers will have until January 1, 2005, to recognize and remember to adhere to the new stop sign.
After that, there will be no more warnings, only traffic citations. Traffic on Market Street has the right of way at the stop sign. The official snowmobile season on the Island is November 15 through April 15. Snowmobilers must not exceed 20 miles per hour. Near school, the speed limit is 10 miles per hour. Those operating a snowmobile on the Island must have valid permits from city police and the State Park and must have a valid driver’s license. Snowmobilers must also be aware of “No Parking” signs on Main Street, Market Street, Hoban Street, and Astor Street to allow for city snow plowing. The signs alternate to each side of the street to allow plows to clear snow.
Alderman Jason St. Onge, at the December 8 council meeting, asked Chief Lenaghan to keep the Market Street curb areas across from the fire hall clear so emergency vehicles can maneuver on and off the street.
