Visitor To Promote Development of Detroit Medical Center

John Lore, a trustee of the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, will promote development of the Detroit Medical Center.
John S. Lore, a frequent visitor to Mackinac Island and a trustee on the board of the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, has accepted a management post at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and will be in charge of fundraising to assist the financially strapped facility. A retired CEO of the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System and creator of Ascension Health, one of the largest not-for-profit health care systems in the United States, Mr. Lore will join the DMC as its senior vice president of development.

"John brings extensive experience in building a community, a destination, strengthening economic vitality around the current infrastructure and neighborhoods as well as world class fundraising,” said Michael Duggan, president and CEO of the DMC. “His past leadership has helped systems like the St. John Health System, Borgess Health Alliance, and Genesys Health System to be a catalyst of neighborhood improvement while creating a great place to work. John will assume a leadership role in recruiting high-level volunteers and will develop fundraising strategies that support the ongoing growth and progress of the DMC hospitals and physicians."

In 1993, Mr. Lore was appointed president and CEO of the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System, the parent corporation of St. John Health System. Several years later, he led the system in joining the Daughters of Charity National Health System, creating one of the nation's largest health systems, which currently has more than 100,000 employees in 20 states and is known as Ascension Health. He remained with Ascension as executive vice president of system development before retiring in 2000.

In 2001, Mr. Lore was appointed as the president and CEO of ConnectMichigan Alliance. The alliance was a public/private partnership formed with a $20 million endowment designed to build and sustain volunteer communities throughout Michigan. Most recently, he has served as an interim president and CEO of the Bay Economic Development Corporation in Bay City. In this position Mr. Lore worked to create infrastructure to transition the corporation from a private development program to a public/private regional development program now known as Bay Future, Inc.

Mr. Lore is recognized nationally in the area of philanthropy. In 2002, he was named Outstanding Fundraising Executive by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Among many other honors and appointments, he has served as president and CEO of the Michigan Colleges Foundation and as director of alumni and development at Western Michigan University. He also served as vice president for development and planning and, later, as president of Nazareth College in Kalamazoo.

John Lore will relocate from Bay City to downtown Detroit with his wife, Judy, who is also recognized in community funding and volunteer leadership roles throughout Michigan. He will begin his position at the DMC January 1.

The Detroit Medical Center is the leading health care system in metropolitan Detroit. The largest private employer in the city of Detroit, with more than 13,000 employees, it operates 10 hospitals and institutes, two nursing centers, and more than 50 primary care practices throughout southeast Michigan. The system has 2,000 licensed beds, 3,000 affiliated physicians, and serves as the teaching and clinical research site for Wayne State University School of Medicine.
