Police’s Winter Vehicle Transport Program Begins

The Mackinac Island Police Department is urging those who qualify for the department’s winter vehicle transport program to sign up. Transportation will be offered on a limited and necessary basis to people 55 or older, disabled citizens who cannot be accommodated by the horse-drawn taxi service, and people who have special needs that require additional consideration.

The third eligibility, said Police Chief William Lenaghan, allows police officers to use good judgment on a case-by-case basis, so as not to turn down anyone who is in need of a ride who may not meet the first two eligibility requirements.

Authorized drop-off sites are the Police Department, Community Hall, Medical Center, Arnold Dock, Harrisonville General Store, Doud Mercantile, Mackinac Island Public School, Ste. Anne’s Church, and the airport.

Other drop-off locations need to be approved by Mr. Lenaghan or by Lieutenant Pete Komblevitz.

The police department is reminding those on the vehicle transportation list that emergency calls take precedence over transportation.

Those eligible for police transport need to have their applications on file prior to participation.

Horse-drawn taxi service is also available by reservation by calling 847-3323. Reservations must be made by 3 p.m. for taxi service after 5 p.m. or the following morning.
