Hon. Michael Hegarty
Hon. Michael Hegarty The Honorable Michael K. Hegarty of Brighton and Mackinac Island, a district court judge and former member of the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at the age of 71.

Mr. Hegarty served on the Park Commission from 1969 to 1971 and was a judge at 53rd District Court in Livingston County. Mr. Hegarty will be remembered as a well respected contributor to his community, colleagues said, with a strong sense of responsibility and work ethic.

“He was a nice guy and always a good contributor to the Commission,” said Ken Teysen of Mackinaw City, who served with Mr. Hegarty on the Mackinac Island State Park Commission. “When we got carried away politically, he was always one to bring us back to common sense. He was a good, dependable man.”

Mr. Hegarty was born to John and Myrtle (nee McBride) Hegarty June 16, 1933, and was graduated from the University of Notre Dame and the Notre Dame Law School. He served as Judge Advocate General with the U.S. Air Force and was a trial lawyer in private practice in Detroit and Brighton.

He was appointed 53rd District Court Judge in 1992 and resigned in April because of declining health. According to The Ann Arbor News , he had been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.

He married Jane Elizabeth Porritt April 4, 1964 and she survives, along with their children and their families, Michael and Sharon Hegarty of Farmington Hills, Charles and Kathleen Hegarty of Canton, and Mary Hegarty of Brighton; four grandchildren, Abigail and Brooke of Farmington Hills and Patrick and Brigid of Canton, and a brother and his family, John and Beverly Hegarty Jr. of Amelia Island, Florida.

Visitation was Sunday, May 15, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brighton with services Monday at 10 a.m. at the church.

Memorials can be made to the Mackinac Island Medical Center or to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Herrmann Funeral Home in Brighton handled arrangements.
