Jamie Andress, Blisse Beardsley, Emma Chambers, and Richard Chaffee, this year’s Mackinac Island High School senior class, went to San Diego to celebrate four years of hard work and the bright future that lies ahead of them. From Saturday, May 14, through Saturday, May 21, they visited Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, and Universal Studios, and they took a tour of the city, went shopping and surfing and sailing, watched movies, and went swimming at night.

“The kids took surfing lessons and spent some time surfing. They thought it was fun, but a lot harder than it looked,” said Susan Bennett, the class advisor who, with Mark Chambers, accompanied the seniors on their trip.

Emma Chambers looked forward to seeing the Hollywood sign atop the mountain, an icon so familiar in films. But going to the beach was even more exciting.

“The beach was the best,” she said.

“Surfing was the most exciting part” of the trip, said Richard Chaffee. The waves of Lake Huron hardly compare to the surf at San Diego, he noted.

Jamie Andress got to a pet a dolphin at Sea World.

Most impressive to this group, however, was the weather.

“The weather was perfect every day,” said Mr. Chaffee, a Michigander used to frequent fluctuations.

This class has been raising funds for the trip since seventh grade, and their destination was determined, in part, by the amount of money in their travel fund.

“As long as they were going south and warm, they were happy,” said school secretary Barb Fisher.

Graduation ceremonies for these cross-country travelers is Friday, May 27, at 7 p.m.
