This summer’s participants of Darlene Olson’s gymnastics classes (back, from left): Amelia Roe, Diana Dupre, Hailey Bean, Zhane Nash, Maggie Chambers, and Morgan Brodeur-Bunker; (front) Hailey Armstrong, Kyra Kolatski, Adrienne Rilenge, and Mackenzie Bean.

After eight weeks of practice, girls age five to 12 who took gymnastics classes with Darlene Olson were ready to show off all that they had learned Tuesday, August 2, at Mackinac Island Public School.

The audience was entertained with tumbling rolls, cartwheels, round offs, kick overs, hand and head stands, hand springs, and exercises on the balance beam and p-bar.

The p-bar is an apparatus designed for male gymnasts, but the girls were up for the challenge of strengthening their muscles, and they ended the recital with a routine they created for it.

All of the girls started at level one eight weeks ago and have progressed at their own pace.

“What’s so nice about gymnastics is that it’s an individual sport,” Mrs. Olson said.

Recreation Department Director Leanne Brodeur said she is impressed with the girls’ progress.

Mrs. Olson has been teaching gymnastics classes on the Island for 18 seasons and said she has enjoyed watching the girls grow, as gymnasts and as people.

“They’re such a good group,” she said, adding that the girls will be able to use the skills they have learned in all sports and areas of their lives, not just gymnastics.

She and her husband, George, own Olson’s Gym in Cheboygan.
