Students Begin New School Year with Picnic, Motivational Speaker

Music, Activities Highlight Island School Opening Celebration September 6

For Mackinac Island Public School students, the first day of school Tuesday, September 6, will include a community picnic, the vocal talents of Mary McGuire Slevin, fun activities provided by Great Turtle Toys, and a motivational speech by Brett Eastburn.

The annual school opening celebration has been the fall’s first big community event for six years.

“We want the whole community to come and show the kids that the first day of school is important,” said school secretary Barb Fisher.

Classes will be held from 8:20 a.m. to noon, then it is time for hot dogs and hamburgers. At 1 p.m., Brett Eastburn will present a lecture entitled, “No Arms ... No Legs ... No Handicaps (No disabilities either!).”

Mr. Eastburn has been speaking professionally since 1990. Born with no arms or legs, he is an inspiration to all he meets, said Mrs. Fisher, and has a long list of hobbies and accomplishments.

“I think a motivational speaker is a great way to start things,” she said.

The Mackinac Island Community Foundation is providing partial funding for Mr. Eastburn’s lecture.

The public is invited to the cook-out and Mr. Eastburn’s presentation.
