Candy Smith, who is Mackinac Island City Recreation’s Volunteer of the Year, received another title when she was crowned Snow Queen for this year’s annual Winter Festival. She was presented with a plaque from the City by Mayor Margaret Doud during the opening ceremony of the festival Friday, February 4 and was crowned with a tiara by reigning Lilac Queen Jennifer Wightman. She also received a dozen white roses and a blue fleece throw, hand-made by Luann Mosley.

Ms. Smith was named Volunteer of the Year by the City Recreation Department December 8.

Owing to warm weather and a thick fog, the opening of Winter Festival wasn’t ideal for skating at the horse ring at Great Turtle Park, but the children made the best of it by sledding, instead. Participants also enjoyed hot dogs and a bonfire.

During Sunday’s event, held at the school, many prizes were awarded to several people, including Dave Johnson, who won the raffle for a quilt and pillow set, hand-made by Helen Bunker Dixon of Illinois.

Janice Early won two round-trip tickets from Great Lakes Air, Clay Fuller won five gallons of gasoline from Union Terminal Piers, and Trisha Bunker won a commuter pass from Star Line and a $50 savings bond from First National Bank.

Anne St. Onge was the winner of the cookie bake-off contest. Her Jelly on the Spot cookie recipe will be published in the 2007 Seasons of Mackinac Calendar. She also won a $50 gift certificate from Doud Mercantile.

Island students Ashley Gough, Shelbie Mosley, Morgan Brodeur -Bunker, and Hailey Bean were the festival button seller winners. Paul Fisher, Tymon Horn, and Anthony Rickley placed second, while Zhane Nash placed third.

Leanne Brodeur, who coordinated the Seasons of Mackinac photo contest for the 2007 calendar, said 117 voters cast ballots for 137 photographs. Winners of the contest will be announced at a later date in The St. Ignace News .

The calendar is a fundraiser for Mackinac Island Recreational Development (MIRD). The nonprofit organization will now accept photographs of Mackinac for the 2008 calendar. Call Leanne Brodeur at 847-3853 or Barb Fisher at 847-3376 for more details.
