Calendar Photo Contest Winners Announced

Mr. Main’s photograph, though a bit blurry, was one of the winning photographs that will be featured in the Mackinac Island Recreational Development 2007 calendar, “Seasons of Mackinac.”
Winners for the 2007 “Seasons of Mackinac” calendar photograph contest have been announced by Mackinac Island Recreational Development (MIRD). They were selected from among 137 entries by 117 voters during the Winter Festival in February. Each voter picked three photographs for each season.

The list of the winning photographs for each month is as follows:

Cover - “1000 Footer Sails Into the Sunset on The Straits of Mackinac,” by Sara Chambers of Mackinac Island and “Freighter Makes Cold Misty Passage Through The Straits,” by Jill St. Onge of St. Louis, Michigan.

January - “Doorway to Historical Winter Cityscape,” by Greg Main of Mackinac Island.

February - “British Landing Winter Passage to Mainland,” by Gary LaPine of Mackinac Island.

March - “Arnold Boat Huron Awaiting First Spring Crossing,” by Bruce Miller of Grand Ledge.

April - “Round Island Lightning Strike,” by Greg Main.

May- “Colorful Spring Blooms Greet Early Visitors,” by Fofie Pappas of Ypsilanti.

June- “Peaceful Respite Under The Lilacs,” by Karen Snyder of Niles.

July- “The Island’s Natural Wonder, Arch Rock,” by Marilyn Bedell of Beverly Hills, Michigan.

August - “Island Transportation Goes to The Dogs,” by Bernadette Cox of Noblesville, Indiana.

September - “Brisk Winds Stir The Straits of Mackinac,” by Lynn Leone of Macomb.

October - “The Island Welcomes Fall Celebrations,” by Lynn Leone.

November - “Island Horses Discuss Winter Plans While Waiting For Boat,” by Amber Elliot of Mackinac Island.

December - “Island Main Street Aglow For The Holiday,” by Marilyn Bedell.

MIRD, an Island nonprofit organization, started the “Seasons of Mackinac” in 1983 and the project has helped fund Great Turtle Park and other Island recreational programs.

To submit photographs for the 2008 calendar, either purchase a 2005 or 2006 calendar and fill out the order form on the tear-out page in the calendar, or call Leanne Brodeur at 847-3853 or Barb Fisher at 847-3376 for more details.

Calendars can be purchased on the Island for $8 at the Mackinac Island Public School, the city offices in Community Hall on Market Street, or Doud Mercantile downtown.

Calendars can also be ordered through the mail. Make checks payable to Mackinac Island Recreational Development for $8, plus $2.50 for shipping and handling, and mail to MIRD, P.O. Box 421, Mackinac Island, MI 49757.

Judging of photographs for the 2008 calendar will be at the Island’s 2006 Winter Festival the first weekend in February.
