Island’s Murray Hotel Evacuated

A defective smoke detector prompted the evacuation of 70 guests from the Murray Hotel early Tuesday morning, May 10, but no injuries were reported.

Fire Chief Dennis Bradley said three fire trucks responded to the 5 a.m. alarm, while one remained on standby. One of the hotel’s smoke detectors was shorted by a water leak, he added.

He commended hotel staff and management for their role in evacuating the hotel and insuring the safety of the guests.
