City: Register All Bicycles

Mackinac Island bicycle owners should register their bicycles with the city or face a civil infraction. New licenses are issued each year on May 1.

Registering a bicycle is always to the owner’s benefit, said Mackinac Island Police Lieutenant Peter Komblevitz, because the bicycle information and the license number helps police locate lost or stolen bicycles and return them.

A bicycle license costs $3.50, but if police impound a bicycle because it doesn’t have a license, the owner must pay $15 to get it back, plus the $3.50 licence fee.

To obtain a license, bicycle owners must provide the police department with a description of the bicycle and the bicycle’s frame number, usually located on the front fork, back fork, or the crank.
