Island Students Honored With New ‘Anchor Awards’
Susan Bennett filled in for Superintendent Jack Dehring, who is serving on a federal grand jury in Marquette. Mrs. Bennett presented outstanding mathematics students with their awards. Ninth grader Kyle Sweet, 8th grader Fuller Cowell, and 8th grader Shay Mosley were given awards for having the three highest grades in mathematics. Eighth grader Arial Leeper and 9th grader Karlena Mosley were recognized for best effort, and senior Blisse Beardsley received an award for her hard work and effort in her Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry Interactive Television class from DeTour. English teacher Lance Greenlee presented awards for writing to 10th grader Kristi Kamphuis, who Mr. Greenlee described as “very meticulous,” and “never skimps on assignments,” and to Scott Roguska. Nicole Helsel presented science awards to Emma Chambers, Ben Mosley, and Christina McLean. Jennifer Bloswick, execuive director of the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, presented $750 scholarships from the Margaret W. and Wesley H. Maurer Scholarship Fund and $450 scholarships from the Mark Gallagher Scholarship Fund to Seniors Blisse Beardsley and Emma Chambers. Jessica Clark presented social studies awards to 8th grader Darcy Brodeur-Bunker and 8th grader Fuller Cowell, who both earned 96.25 percent averages, to 9th grader Kyle Sweet for earning A’s in both of his social studies classes, senior Ben Mosley for his effort in current events and discussions, and to Arial Leeper. Mrs. Clark noted that Arial “really works hard” and does extra work at home to maintain her A average. Students earning a 3.0 average and above were named to the Northern Lights League All-academic Team Honorable Mention and included 7th graders Tymon Horn, Jane Finkel, Paul Fisher, Thomas Rilenge, and Shelby Mosley, 8th graders Darcy Brodeur-Bunker, Robert Chambers, Fuller Cowell, Arial Leeper, Shay Mosley, and Danielle Wightman, 9th graders Woody Beardsley, Karlena Mosley, and Kyle Sweet, 10th grader Kristi Kamphuis, 11th graders Tyler Finkel, Sam Kamphuis, Miranda McMahon, and Jason Pettit, and 12th graders Blisse Beardsley and Emma Chambers. Ken Straight presented the soccer awards. Seniors Blisse Beardsley and Emma Chambers were cited by soccer coach Ken Straight for leading the team as captains. “Both of these individuals really played their hearts out,” Mr. Straight said. Underclassmen receiving awards were Tyler Finkel, Sam Kamphuis for most improved player, Kristi Kamphuis, Ben Mosley for being the top goal scorer, Jason Pettit for his great effort, and Emily St. Onge for her good effort and for being a good hustler. Athletic letters were also given to those players who are freshmen playing their first sport: Woody Beardsley, Riley Chaffee, Karlena Mosley, and Caleb Straight. Kate Dupre, Robert Chambers, and Shay Mosley were presented with certificates for being the newest members of the team. Senior Emma Chambers and junior Jason Pettit received recognition for being Northern Lights League All-league players. Ryan Fox presented students with the boys’ basketball awards. “We had a great year,” he said. “It was a lot of fun.” Certificates were awarded to Robert Chambers, who Mr. Fox said was the fastest kid he had ever seen and to best shooter, Michael Gamble. Medals were awarded to Woody Beardsley, who started every game, Caleb Straight for being “another young hustler,” and Riley Chaffee for most improved player. Upperclassmen medals went to Sam Kamphuis for most improved player, Ben Mosley for being Mr. Defense, and Jason Pettit. Richard Chaffee received an award for being the only senior on the team. Team captains Jason Pettit and Richard Chaffee received Northern Lights League All-league awards. Mrs. Helsel presented the awards for girls’ volleyball to 8th graders Shay Mosley, Danielle Wightman, and Arial Leepe, 9th grader Karlena Mosley, 10th grader Kristi Kamphuis, 11th graders Melanie Bunker, Christina McLean, and Emily St. Onge, and to Seniors Blisse Beardsley and Emma Chambers, team captains. Team voted awards were presented to Emily St. Onge for most valuable player, Blisse Beardsley received the Laker Award, Kristi Kamphuis was voted most improved, and Arial Leeper was voted most spirited. Coach Awards were given to Blisse Beardsley for being top server, Kristi Kamphuis for being best offensive player, and Emma Chambers for being best defensive player. Awards were also given to Blisse Beardsley and Emma Chambers for being Northern Lights League All-league players, Arial Leeper for being team cheerleader, and Colton Fisher for being team manager. Former Mackinac Island Public School student Sarah Dehring lightened the mood when she presented her track and field awards. She made comments about each player and poked fun at Woody Beardsley for being the team comedian, Caleb Straight for running as little as possible, Sam Kamphuis for not coming to practice, Emma Chambers for being sick at every track meet, and Robert Chambers for being sick at every track practice. Each coach was presented by their teams with a personalized sweatshirt, thanking them for all of their hard work this season. Mrs. Bennett presented pins to those who have been on the honor roll for the first three marking periods: 8th graders Darcy Brodeur-Bunker, Fuller Cowell, Arial Leeper, Shay Mosley, and Danielle Wightman, 9th graders Woody Beardsley, Kyle Sweet, and Karlena Mosley, 10th grader Kristi Kamphuis, 11th graders Tyler Finkel, Sam Kamphuis, and Jason Pettit, and 12th graders Blisse Beardsley and Emma Chambers. Blisse Beardsley and Emma Chambers were both awarded $500 from the Boys of Mackinac Scholarship Fund and $500 from the Stella King Scholarship Fund, Blisse Beardsley received $5,000 and Emma Chambers received $3,000 from the John Franks Scholarship Fund, and Blisse Beardsley was also presented the Michigan Competitive Scholarship for her ACT score. All four seniors, Blisse Beardsley, Emma Chambers, Jamie Andress, and Richard Chaffee received the Michigan Merit Award.
