Does Island Look the Same Today as a Generation Ago?
Largely through architectural preservation. In many cases, local landowners and business owners have made genuine financial sacrifices to retain a “Mackinac Island feel” to their properties. For example, a builder or owner may choose to use building materials that are true to the 19th century, even though they may be more expensive than “modern” materials. A familiar example to many Islanders is painted wooden clapboard siding, which is significantly more expensive and demands much more upkeep than tinted plastic siding. Question 3: Is Mackinac Island still a safe place to bring children on a vacation? Mackinac Island is one of the safest places for young children on a trip in the United States. That being said, it is wise to take some elementary precautions. Too many visitors of all ages treat the absence of cars as an excuse to go wandering out into streets and rural roads throughout Mackinac. Especially on steep hills, everyone, especially children, should look both ways when entering a street. Bicyclists should be careful to brake when going down hills, and younger bikers may want to walk their bikes when going both up and down the steeper slopes. Since the late 1800s, rubber-tired bicycles have sped down Mackinac’s hills at speeds faster than 20 m.p.h. Question 4: What are some of the biggest changes to be seen in Mackinac Island’s downtown area since 1980? Many of Mackinac Island’s ferryboats are bigger and faster. Two new hotels, the Lilac Tree Hotel and the Main Street Inn & Suites, have increased the number of beds on Main Street. A wide variety of bed and breakfast establishments have also opened downtown, many of them rehabilitations of pre-existing historic structures. With later ferryboat departures and more accommodation space, today’s downtown area is livelier at night. Question 5: What are some of the biggest changes to be seen at Fort Mackinac since 1980? In the 1980s, the Mackinac Island State Park began a multi-decade program of rehabilitation and repositioning the historic buildings under its control, especially within Fort Mackinac. Fort Mackinac is now interpreted to the public as an active-duty American post of the late 1880s and early 1890s. This interpretation is true to the actual structures within the Fort (the Fort’s bathhouse was not built until 1885) and is also faithful to the sights visitors will see when strolling the ramparts of the Fort, such as the Grand Hotel (opened in 1887). Question 6: What are some of the biggest changes to be seen at Grand Hotel since 1980? The Millennium Wing, a modern structure featuring 42 guest rooms with view of the Jewel Golf Course and Lake Huron, opened on the east end of the hotel in 2001, giving Grand Hotel the opportunity to offer all-weather hospitality on Mackinac Island. The west end, meanwhile, was expanded in 1998 to add five First Lady Rooms and two new suites. Earlier, the former openwork cupola of the main hotel building was glassed in for 1987 to create the Cupola Bar, with views of the entire Mackinac Straits. Question 7: What are some of the biggest changes visitors will see when taking the Carriage Tour ride into the interior of Mackinac Island? In 1980, Mackinac Island Carriage Tours began to operate Surrey Hills, the re-staging area where passengers on Mackinac’s “stagecoaches” alight from the historic red-and-yellow surreys and board modern three-horse hitches for a ride through the relatively flat and level interior plateau of the Island. Throughout the years since 1980, Surrey Hills has been improved with a variety of family attractions, including a carriage museum and butterfly house. This being Mackinac, there is of course a fudge shop as well. Question 8: What are some of the biggest changes from 1980 bikers and in-line skaters will see when circumnavigating Mackinac on Lake Shore Road? The obsolete water plant north of Arch Rock has been replaced by a sanitary modern structure below Robinson’s Folly. New nature trails, near Carver Pond, British Landing, and Brown’s Brook, point out the ecology of the State Park, particularly the plants and animals that live along its humid shoreline. Much of the former Stonecliffe estate on the west side of Mackinac Island has been developed into condominiums and upscale housing units. And, of course, bladers did not use Lake Shore Road in 1980 because the modern in-line blade shoe had not yet been invented. (Postcard courtesy of Bob Cole)
