Island Visitors Like To Fly In “I took up flying so I could get to the Island,” said Douglas Hackbarth. He and his wife, Sandy, fly here in their Censa 172 twice a year and always stay at the Windermere. Driving from their home in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a seven-hour trip, but flying takes only three hours. They come in the spring for the Lilac Festival parade and again in the summer for a week. This year’s summer trip coincided with their 34th wedding anniversary. They like Mackinac for its calmness, peacefulness, and the relaxation it provides, he said, “What more can you say? It’s Mackinac.” “We also like to eat and watch the tourists,” he added.
