Tuesday afternoon, August 9, a storm warning was issued for high winds and hail. While the Island did not experience either, dark clouds hung over Mackinac, causing great concern. It became just like night. The community hall and fire hall were opened to allow the many visitors to take shelter from the storm. Horses and carriages were put in the barns. We received heavy rain, but nothing to damage the Island. We were very lucky.

Ferry boats to the Island remained in operation, but horses were called back to their barns about 30 minutes before the storm was to hit because a severe thunderstorm warning was issued with the prediction of 70-mile-per-hour winds and quarter inch hail. Both failed to materialize. While Island visitors have enjoyed a summer of rain-free days, Islanders have had to work extra hard to keep gardens watered and flowers blooming as drought conditions have plagued most of the Upper Peninsula this summer. This photograph was taken on Main Street looking toward Windermere Point.
