One Night Gallery Show Set for Saturday, Sept. 10

Above "America Strikes Back," a pand-printed silver gelatin photograph by John Ivey Abitz, will be on display with other prints at Grand Hotel September 10.
Artists Joshua and Cynthia Ivey Abitz will host a public exhibition of their art entitled, "One Night Only Show," at Grand Hotel Saturday, September 10. The show will feature more than 30 recent silver gelatin prints selected from work created in the United Kingdom, Italy, and North America. Public viewing will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Cottage Restaurant, next to the main dining room.

A departure from the Mackinac landscapes featured in the artists' former Mackinac Island gallery, the show will be full of faces and landscapes from places off the Island.

"For the past few years, these photographs took a back seat to the Mackinac landscapes we had in our former Island gallery," said Cynthia Ivey Abitz. "It's time to celebrate the rest of the world. As a destination, the Island is visited by the outside world constantly. This show is a way to celebrate that world and the people in it."

The show's one-night-only theme, she said, complements the concept of photography as temporary, timely, and fleeting. Subjects will range from portraits to landscapes. Titles include "Woman on London Bus," a street photograph of a bus commuter taken before the London bombings in June; "Man Eating Custard," a light-hearted portrait from Wisconsin and "America Strikes Back," a slice of everyday American life.

The art will be for sale.
