Mackinac Island Soccer Program Prepares for Season With Young Squad

Third-year coach Ken Straight will have 19 players on the 2005 Mackinac Island soccer roster this fall, 15 of them sophomores or younger.

"This is a young team and the largest since I started coaching with four seniors and no juniors," said Coach Straight. "We will all learn as the season goes on."

The seniors playing will need to be the leaders during their final season and they are Ben Mosley, Sam Kamphuis, Christina McLean, and Emily St. Onge.

Sophomores Woody Beardsley, Riley Chaffee, Caleb Straight, and Karlena Mosley will blend in with freshmen Robert Chambers, Kate Dupre, Shay Mosley, Tyler McLain, Michi Mullings, and Michael Gamble.

First-year players are eighth grade students Paul Fisher, Shelbie Mosley, Thomas Rilenge, Jane Finkel, and Tyman Horn.

"Practice and game experience will be important for this group of athletes,” Mr. Straight said. “Working as a team will also be crucial."

The Lakers open the season with a Northern Lights League road weekend series at Beaver Island Friday, September 9, and Saturday, September 10, face new opponent Ojibwe/

Brimley on the road Friday, September 16, and Saturday, September 17, before returning home to entertain Hannahville Friday, September 23, and Saturday, September 24, and Paradise Friday, September 30, and Saturday, October. They are back on the road against Big Bay de Noc Tuesday, October 4, at Grand Marais Friday, October 7, and Saturday, October 8, and wrap up the season at home against Munising Baptist Friday, October 14, and Saturday, October 15.
