John McCabe Euology
By Jeannette Doud

Whom God loves,

He gives a home on Mackinac.

Our dear friend, Dr. John McCabe, loved Mackinac with all his heart and made it his permanent home, in a beautiful little cottage in a glorious wooded forest near British Landing he shared with his devoted wife, Karen. The sign at the entrance reads, “Toad Hall.”

Although Dr. McCabe was retired from his college teaching, he never gave up his writing or reading. It was the fountain of his wisdom. With pen in hand and his little computer, he worked daily, which was the price of success, and to be kind and friendly was his road to happiness.

Often, in the peace and tranquility of his home, Karen would read to him, which he enjoyed. A hearty little garden, which Karen planted, produced flowers and vegetables close by.

On beautiful summer days and evenings they would often walk the shore road to see the vibrant blue of the water or to watch the golden rays of the sunsets as they slowly descended beyond the Mackinac Bridge. In the gladness of May, their little bird houses attracted their feathered friends that sang their daily songs. Blooming wildflowers blanketed the area.

The McCabes were just as happy in their little home when the clean white snow would decorate the trees, creating a perfect winter scene. Karen would use her snowblower quickly, making a winter path to Toad Hall.

Always on Christmas Eve at Ste. Anne’s, Dr. McCabe was invited by Father Jim Williams to read the Christmas Message from the altar. Fond memories not soon to be forgotten.

The Shakespeare lectures that he gave weekly during the summer at Grand Hotel gave pleasure to all who attended.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; a daughter, Deirdre Berardi; two sons, Linard and Sean, and three grandchildren, David and Daniel Berardi and Chelsea McCabe.

Memorials may be directed to the Mackinac Island Medical Center or the Mackinac Island Community Foundation.

Dr. McCabe treasured most the simple things that filled his heart with rich content.

Rest in peace on Mackinac, your home of many years.
