The wedding of Carmen Aranda and Christian Barr took place at Mission Church on Mackinac Island Saturday, August 20, at 5 p.m.
The groom is the second son of Penny and John Barr of Bronxville, New York and of the West Bluff on Mackinac Island. The bride is the daughter of Carmen and Ramon Aranda of New Hyde Park, New York and Valencia, Spain.
The Reverend Vincent Carroll of The Little Stone Church performed the ceremony on what turned out to be a sunny, beautiful late afternoon.
The groom’s brother, Nathan, was best man and the groom’s sister, Jenny, was maid of honor. The flowerets were the bride’s nieces, Emily and Marisa Young of West Virginia, and the ring bearer was Ryan Mayobre of Virginia. Ushers were the groom’s cousin, Philip Wilson of Missoula, Montana, and Michael Mayobre.
The flowers of remembrance were placed at the altar by Julia Wilson of Chicago and Manny Mayobre. Ione Glassman, the grooms 87-year-old grandmother of Appleton, Wisconsin, was accompanied by the groom’s aunt, Patti Wilson, also of Appleton. Seven relatives traveled from Spain to attend a week of festivities preceding the wedding and were guests at the Goodwin cottage, “Casa Verano,” on the West Bluff.
The ceremony consisted of seven love poems selected by the bride and groom, each read by a member of one of the families. The selections came from the writings of Laura Randall, James Joyce, St. Francis, Charlotte Bronte, the Spanish poet, Federico Garcia Lorca, read in the original Spanish, and Amy Lowell. The final poem was written and read by the groom’s father.
Music for the church and the reception was provided by Grand Hotel’s music director, Alex Graham. The flowers for the church and hotel were designed and orchestrated under the direction of Mimi Cunningham, manager of Margaret’s Garden at Grand Hotel.
The bride and groom received their undergraduate degrees from Bennington College in Vermont. The bride is studying for her master’s degree in education at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles. The groom is beginning a career in the music industry in Los Angeles, where he recently helped orchestrate music for the summer movie hit, “The Dukes of Hazard.” The couple will reside in Topanga, California.
The couple were whisked away from Mission Church by a pair of black hackneys pulling a special black “gentleman’s carriage” driven by John Reagle, for pictures by photographer Jeff DuPre on the boardwalk. The reception was held on the porch with dinner and dancing in the Grand Pavilion of Grand Hotel.
John Barr’s poem to the newlyweds follows.
“For the Marriage
of Chris and Carmen”
By John Barr
Once there was an inland sea,
Its waters blue and beautiful
With absence, for there was nothing else.
And this was once upon a time.
Out of this sea an island rose,
Its conifers green with abundance,
Its reaches white where the waves climbed,
And this was once upon a time.
Out of the island there rose a town,
Its streets busy with men,
Its harbor brown with boats
Bearing the cargos of the time.
Out of the town a church was raised,
Its walls in all simplicity
Contained like hands the faith
And the fervor of that time.
And out of this church that rose from the town
That rose from the island that rose from the sea
A man and woman came and joined.
Their love was green with abundance
And white where the waves climbed
And beautiful and blue. And it held like hands
In all simplicity our time,
And other times and once upon a time.
