Mark Goodman Named Executive Vice President of Marketing and Membership

Mark D. Goodman
Mark D. Goodman, the 37-year-old son of Judith and George Goodman of Mackinac Island, has joined Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., as executive vice- president of marketing and membership of the retailer’s Sam’s Club division, effective October 1.

He and his wife, Amy, and their dog, Scooter, are now living in Michigan and plan to move to Bentonville, Arkansas, the corporation’s headquarters.

Mr. Goodman has been an executive at McDonald’s Corporation, serving as vice-president of U.S. strategy and operations, where he helped create the company’s long-term growth vision for the United States operation. Additionally, he has guided management through development of a 10-year roadmap through identifying key consumer and trade trends.

At Sam’s Club, Mr. Goodman will have responsibility for strategy development, marketing, enhancement of the membership experience for business members and for Advantage members who don’t own a business, and the Sam’s Club Web site. He will also oversee promotion of credit, travel, and other premium member services.

“He brings an understanding of the consumer that will absolutely be a key factor in improving our member experience,” said Sam’s Club president and CEO, Doug McMillion.

Mr. Goodman was an economic and foreign policy advisor to Senator Edward Kennedy in 1994, while completing a master’s fellowship for advanced study in economics and business management at Harvard University. He has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy of economics from College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, and a master’s degree in economics and philosophy from Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts.

He joined McDonald’s in 1999 and, before that, served as president of a retail company and worked as a consultant on global supply chain, strategy, and manufacturing.
