Police Raise Age to 60 for Motor Winter Transports

A new senior citizen transportation policy is in place that increases the age requirement from 55 years to 60 years and offers three additional drop-off points.

Transportation, provided by police in their vehicle, will be offered on a limited and necessary basis to people 60 years or older, disabled residents who cannot be accommodated by the horse-drawn taxi service, and people requiring additional consideration because of special needs.

Authorized drop-off sites are the Police Department, Medical Center, Arnold Dock, Harrisonville General Store, Doud Mercantile, Mackinac Island Public School, Ste. Anne’s Church, Trinity Church, the airport, Community Hall, the post office, First National Bank, and Central Savings Bank.

Other drop-off locations need to be approved by Police Chief Bill Lenaghan or by Lieutenant Pete Komblevitz.

Those using the transportation service are reminded that emergency calls take precedence over transportation.

Those eligible for police transportation need to have their applications on file prior to participation.

Horse-drawn taxi service is available all winter by reservation at 847-3323. Reservations must be phoned in by 3 p.m. for taxi service after 5 p.m. or for the following morning.
