NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND

BY JEANNETTE DOUD

Red, white, and blue spinnakers made a very picturesque sight early Monday morning, July 24, as boats in the Chicago-to-Mackinac fleet were eager to pass over the finish line. The day was warm and beautiful as crowds of wellwishers stood on Windermere Point to cheer them on.

It was fun to watch each time the cannon sounded to announce their arrival as they crossed the finish line at the old Round Island Lighthouse. It's quite a contrast from wintertime to a balmy day in July like Monday. As snow covers the stately old Round Island Lighthouse and ice appears in the Straits, there is peace and solitude. On a cold winter evening, with a full moon shining down on the Straits, one still finds the old lighthouse proudly guarding the Straits, as it has for more than a century. It's a joy to see her flashing light illuminating the waters for the Chicago-to-Mackinac yacht race.

Mary Jane Barnwell will celebrate her birthday August 2. I hope you and Willie have a very special day.

Happy 20th wedding anniversary to Kris and Ray Clark July 26. Congratulations from Island friends.

Saturday, July 15, family and friends gathered at the cottage of John and Mary Davey on the East Bluff to celebrate the life of Patrick J. Davey, who passed away last October in Bradenton, Florida, at the age of 81. Pat came to Mackinac in 1924 to the family cottage at the Mission. He spent many of his growing-up summers on the Island and happily returned for the last 25 summers of his life. Pat absolutely loved every inch of Mackinac and enjoyed golfing, hiking, and most of all, visiting with his many Island friends, especially Mar and Pat Pulte, Jeannette Doud, and the late Stephen Doud. Pat traveled all over the world, especially the islands of the South Pacific, but nothing compared to Mackinac Island. Family attending the gathering were Pat's daughter, Janet Truelove, and son, Matt, of Sarasota, Florida, son, Judge Kevin Davey of Tallahassee, Florida, nephew, Walt Lindemann of Kenosha, Wisconsin, niece, Joanne Schlawat of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and nephew, John and Mary Davey of Bloomfield Hills. Deepest sympathy to the family from Pat's many Island friends.

The Lands' End July 2006 catalog featured Mackinac Island and the Round Island Lighthouse on the front cover. It is very colorful, with Ste. Anne's Church standing stately in the background as yachts with colorful sails pass by. Lands' End is a sponsor for the Chicago-to-Mackinac Yacht Race. On page 72, there is a featured article about the sailing yacht named Guaranteed Period, which sailed from Chicago in the longest freshwater race to Mackinac. This is great advertising for the Island.

John, Chris, and family have spent time on the Island every summer for many years at the Terwilliger cottage. They were glad to be back on the Island after a twoyear absence. Matt will be a junior this fall at Ohio State University, where he plays on the basketball team. Luke will be a junior in high school. The family had a wonderful time visiting Mackinac friends.
