Education, Citations Could Resolve City's Trash Problems

By Leslie Rott

Improper use of city trash cans to dispose of household waste is one problem the City of Mackinac Island would like to correct. Rather than issuing citations to violators, however, the city hopes that better education about waste disposal is what is needed.

The issue was discussed Thursday, August 10, by the Streets and Sidewalks Committee and the consensus is that most of the problem is caused by summer residents and workers who stuff kitchen garbage bags and plastic grocery bags full of household waste into city trash cans.

They should be purchasing blue bags from the Department of Public Works, which are picked up by the city when left at the curb.

Mayor Margaret Doud's assistant, Kelly Bean, said that she does not know whether there is a policy on the books for proper use of the city trash cans, but she said she knows there is a policy for the proper way to dispose of trash. In some cases, she said, workers may be able to dispose of their trash with that of their employer.

Blue bags are available at the DPW office on the second floor of Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays for $3 each. The Mackinac Island Service Company provides curbside trash pickup. Cost is $6.30 for up to five bags. To receive curbside pickup, an account must be set up through the company at the Mackinac Island Carriage Tours office on Market Street.

Pickup is made on the following schedule: Monday Stonecliffe Condos, the Woods Restaurant, Woodbluff, Stonecliffe Manor 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Tuesday East Bluff, Mission Area, and Downtown, including Leslie Court. Thursday Annex, West Bluff, and Harrisonville.

Friday Stonecliffe Condos, the Woods Restaurant, British Landing Area, and Leslie Court (2nd pickup for the week).

Residential pickup starts at 9 a.m. and downtown business pickup is at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Additional questions on proper disposal of trash can be directed to the DPW by calling 847-6130.
