Mackinac Island Lakers Soccer Program Shows Strength in Numbers

Mackinac Island soccer season is off to a 6-3 overall record and 3-3 in the Northern Lights League (NLL) after four weeks into the 2006 season.

Coaches Ken Straight and Mary Patay geared the season around 13 returning players with just one senior on the team.

Juniors back are Caleb Straight, Woody Beardsley, and Karlena Mosley, sophomores Kate Dupre, Shayleen Mosley, Robert Chambers, Michael Gamble, Michi Mullings, and Tyler McLean, and freshmen Jane Finkel, Paul Fisher, Shelbie Mosley, and Tymon Horn.

Remaining members of the squad are senior Joshua Richards, junior Chayanon Mokasak, sophomore Brandon Brown, and eighth grade students, Jesse Straight and Morgan Bordeur-Bunker.

Lakers Drop Pair

To Islanders

The Lakers suffered defeats to the Islanders of Beaver Island 8-4 and 7-2 Friday, September 8 and Saturday, September 9. Robert Chambers scored five goals with one assist and Caleb Straight chipped in one goal and two assists.

Lakers Down Northwest

Mackinac Island kicked off their winning streak with a 10-5 non-conference decision over Northwest Academy Wednesday, September 13. Robert Chambers scored seven goals and one assist, Caleb Straight added two goals and two assists, Jesse Straight chipped in one goal and one assist, and Kate Dupre, Michi Mullings, and Tyler McLean notched single assists. Michael Gamble recorded 13 saves in goal.

in Win Over Bobcats

Five players scored in the Lakers' 11-1 win over Munising Baptist Bobcats during an NLL contest, with Robert Chambers scoring three goals and adding one assist, Tyler McLean notching three goals, Caleb Straight chipping in two goals and three assists, Kate Dupre making two goals and one assist, Michi Mullings charting one goal, Jesse Straight contributing two assists, Karlena Mosley credited with one assist, and Michael Gamble making three saves in goal.

Lakers Upend

Soaring Eagles

Mackinac Island made the trip to Hannahville and upended the Soaring Eagles, 10-2, Friday, September 22, and 8-2 Saturday, September 23, in a NLL weekend match-up.

Robert Chambers scored four goals with one assist to lead the Lakers while Caleb and Jesse Straight added two goals and two assists, Tyler McLean notched two goals and one assist, Kate Dupre contributed two assists, and Woody Beardsley recorded nine saves in goal Friday.

Robert Chambers registered three goals and one assist in the win Saturday morning, Caleb Straight chipped in two goals and two assists, Tyler McLean charted two goals and one assist, Jesse Straight marked one goal and two assists, Kate Dupre and Josh Richards tallied one assist, and Woody Beardsley registered eight saves.

Lakers Down Eagles The Lakers defeated Ojibwe

Charter of Bay Mills, 7-0, Monday, September 25, in a game shortened to one-half of play.

Robert Chambers scored two goals and two assists in the win over the Eagles, Caleb Straight and Tyler McLean chipped in one goal and one assist, and Josh Richards, Morgan Brodeur-Bunker, and Shelbie Mosley charted one goal each.

Lakers, Rockets Split

Mackinac Island split with Paradise in an NLL weekend series, falling to the Rockets, 8- 3, Friday, September 29, and coming back to post a 3-2 win Saturday, September 30.

In the opener, Robert Chambers scored two goals with one assist and Caleb Straight chipped in one goal and two assists. On Saturday, Robert Chambers tallied two goals and one assist, Caleb Straight charted one goal and two assists, and Michi Mullings counted one assist.

"The difference from Friday to Saturday was we penetrated their defense," said Lakers coach Ken Straight.

On Saturday, the Lakers took a 3-0 lead before the Rockets scored two goals to cut the advantage to 3-2, but Michael Gamble, in goal, shutout Paradise on two penalty shots to preserve the win.

Mackinac Island will host Grand Marais in a weekend

series with the game Friday, October 6, starting at 5 p.m. and Saturday, October 6, beginning at 9 a.m.
