Doud Mercantile Closes for Second Winter in 124 Years
      Doud Mercantile will close this winter for only the second time in its 124-year history, and Islanders will once again have to make adjustments to the way they shop for groceries and plan their meals. The first closing was during the winter of 1943, when fire gutted the family-owned store, which supplied dry goods, fresh produce, and meats.

      The clippity-clop of horse hooves has almost fallen silent on the streets of Mackinac Island. As the most frigid months of the year approach, only 14 horses remain on the Island to serve residents and visitors through the winter.

Police Arrest 32 in Drug Bust
      Thirty-two people on Mackinac Island have been arrested on drug-related charges this fall, the result of a threeyear investigation by the Mackinac Island Police Department to uproot drug activities. Among them are 10 are year-around residents, said Police Chief William Lenaghan.

Student Films WWII Movie on Island
      Independent film maker Scott Roguska, 17, has just finished editing his latest project, "Dogs of War," a fictional World War II chronicle of elite American paratroopers near the end of the war. Nine Island students joined Mr. Roguska in the production, taking the roles of the soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division.

Snowmobiles mark the way as Santa,
      standing high atop the Mackinac Island fire truck, travels down Market Street to the Fire Hall. There he greeted children by handing out candy canes and listening to Christmas wishes Saturday, December 2. The fire truck is one of seven emergency vehicles that serve the Island.
