Islanders Celebrate Long Days of Winter

The 30th Annual Mackinac Island Winter Festival began with Mayor Margaret Doud crowning Snow Queen Brenda Bunker Friday, February 3. Ms. Bunker was the city’s 2005 volunteer of the year. Ms. Bunker (left) and Mayor Doud were given a ride around town in a sleigh pulled by a snowmobile driven by Johnny Ray Gallagher.

Residents enjoy a winter hot dog and marshmallow roast before the basketball and volleyball games against Beaver Island Friday night, February 3. The second games in the series were played Saturday morning, then heavy winds and snow on Saturday canceled flights back to Beaver, stranding the visiting team for the weekend. The boys split the basketball series and the girls won both volleyball games. (Photographs by Jennifer Bloswick)
