Basketball, Volleyball Tournaments Slated for Early March
The Friday volleyball matches and basketball games count in the league standings and the Saturday contests are non-conference. The season started with Beaver Island, as the volleyball team lost and the basketball squad posted a win. The Lakers played Hannahville, with the hoopsters posting wins and the volleyball team losing. Before the holiday break, the Lakers battled Maplewood Baptist December 20. Coach Sarah Dehring and her Lakers swept the Black Bears 25-20 and 25-21, while Coach Jim Fisher and his squad downed Maplewood Baptist 70-64. The Lakers volleyball swept the Rockets, while the hoopsters downed Paradise 71-58 and 69-61 during the weekend series Friday, January 6, and Saturday, January 7. The junior varsity hoopsters won 66-14 and 75-28.
The volleyball and basketball teams swept the Polar Bears of Grand Marais with the Lakers volleyball squad winning 25-19, 25-22, and 25-21 Friday and 25-22, 25-20, and 25-22 Saturday, while the cagers posted identical 78-22 scores during victories over Grand Marais Friday and Saturday January 27-28. The volleyball team defeated the Islanders of Beaver Island in six of seven matches 25-22, 25-10, and 25-19 Friday and 25-18, 25-14, 17-25, and 25-22 Saturday, February 4, while the hoops squad split, winning 49-41 Friday and suffering then first setback 67-58 Saturday. Mackinac Island will close out the season with weekend series at Grand Marais Friday, February 17, and Saturday, February 18, and at home with Paradise February 24-25 before preparing for the tournaments.
