By David Latva

The 2006 Mackinac Island Lakers track team includes (in back, from left) Assistant Coach Chad Idema, Robert Chambers, Tyler Finkel, Woody Beardsley, Sam Kamphuis, Emily St. Onge, Head Coach Sarah Dehring; (front) Shelbie Mosley, Jane Finkel, Karlena Mosley, Christina McLean, Rhodene "Michi" Mullings, and Annie Porter.
Second year head coach Sarah Dehring and assistant coach Chad Idema will have 11 athletes wearing the Lakers track uniforms at Mackinac Island this spring, but more than half are freshmen and eighth grade students.

Four seniors will compete for the final time on the athletic field as Emily St. Onge will run the 1600 event and throw the discus, Christina McLean the 100 and 200 dashes and relays, Sam Kamphuis the 1600 run, relays, and discus, and Tyler Finkel the 3200 run.

Sophomore Woody Beardsley will compete in the 1600 run, long jump, and shot and discus throws, while freshmen Annie Porter will compete in the 100 and 200 dashes, and relays, Shay Mosley the 100, 1600, and relays, Michi Mullings the 100 and 200 and relays, and Robert Chambers

the 100, 200, long jump, and relays. Eighth graders Shelbie Mosley will appear in the 100, 1600, and shot put and Jane Finkel will be in the 100 and 1600 runs.

"I am pleased with the numbers, but the younger athletes are still searching for their specialty event," said Coach Dehring. "The enthusiasm is strong, and that is important."
