Mackinac Island Harriers Gear Toward Regionals, U.P. Finals
By David Latva

Michi Mullings took fifth in the 200 dash.
Sam Kamphuis, Robert Chambers, and Christina McLean, Mackinac Island Harriers, are gearing toward the Class D regional track and field finals, and if successful in the Friday, May 19, meet at Pickford, the athletes will advance to the Upper Peninsula Finals in Kingsford Saturday, June 3.

Sam Kamphuis, in the 1600 and 800 runs and discus, Robert Chambers, in the 100 and 200 dashes and long jump, and Woody Beardsley, in the long jump, shot, and discus, will head the boys events.

The girls will be led by Emily St. Onge in the 800 and 1600 runs and discus, Christina McLean in the 100 and 200 dashes and discus, Michi Mullings, Anne Porter, and Shayleen Mosley in the 100 and 200 dashes, Shelbie Mosley in the 100 dash and shot put, and Jane Finkel in the 1600 run and 100 dash. A girls 400 meter relay team will possibly be added in time for the regionals.

The Lakers placed during a meet at the Robert W. Smith Track in Cedarville Tuesday, May 9, as Sam Kamphuis finished second in the 1600 in 5:12.15 and third in the 800 in 2:21.49, Robert Chambers fifth in the 100 dash, and Michi Mullings fifth in the 200.

Sam Kamphuis placed in the 1600 and 800 running events at Cedarville.
"We are a small team in numbers, and young, but have some talent that could qualify for the U.P. Finals," said Coach Sarah Dehring. "The athletes have worked hard throughout the season and will be ready for the regionals."
At right: Robert Chambers, in the long jump, took fifth in the 100 dash.
