By Leslie Rott

News/Talk 760 WJR broadcaster Paul W. Smith was on Mackinac Wednesday, May 3, broadcasting live from Grand Hotel during a Circle Michigan Tour to promote tourism. He broadcasted from 5:30 to 9 a.m. in the Cupola Bar, on the sixth floor of Grand Hotel and interviewed R.D. Musser, owner and chairman of Grand Hotel, and Dan Musser, III, the hotel's president.

The Mussers had a lot to say about both the Island and their hotel.

"We're only a tank away and you won't be burning gas while you're here," Mr. Musser III announced.

Of the hotel, he added, "The hotel has never looked this good, this early," and noted that any paintable surface received a new coat of paint.

Mayor Margaret Doud was also interviewed.

"We have a very unique, beautiful location," she said. "We're a step back in time. We're ready for anyone who wants to come."

Mr. Smith described the Island to his listeners as, "A great family destination." He said he thinks Grand Hotel is the best maintained property of its size that he has ever seen.

Phil Porter, director of Mackinac State Historic Parks, and Andrew Doud, manager of the new hotel restaurant, The Gate House, were also interview by Mr. Smith and the broadcast included a telephone interview with race car driver Danica Patrick. "We've been very aware of

how important tourism is for the state," Mr. Smith said. The tour "gets people excited at the start of the season" and "whets their appetite" for travel.

He also seeks to dispel common misconceptions, in this case that Grand Hotel is sold out before the season starts, and that it is too expensive. He tells his listeners that there are many ways for people to travel in Michigan on a budget.

Other stops in the Circle Michigan Tour, Monday, May 1 through Friday, May 5 included Port Huron, Boyne Falls, Bellaire, and Bay City.

This summer marks his ninth year broadcasting the Paul W. Smith Show on WJR, which serves the greater Detroit market.

News/Talk 760 WJR was established in 1922.
