Bike Licenses Now Available

City bicycle licenses are on sale at the Mackinac Island Police Department for $3.50 and are valid until April 2007. Last year's licenses have expired.

Bicycle theft is one of the most common crimes committed on Mackinac Island and police are asking owners to register their bicycle to make it easier for police to return it, if found.

Last year, Mackinac Island Police Department recorded 330 stolen bicycles.

If a bicycle without a license is impounded by police, the owner must pay a $15 impoundment fee plus $3.50 for the license.

To obtain a license, bicycle owners must provide the police department with a description of the bicycle and the bicycle's frame number, usually located on the front fork, back fork, or the crank.
