"View from the Veranda: The History and Architecture of the Summer Cottages on Mackinac Island," by Phil Porter, has been revised to include present-day color photographs of the cottages and incorporates additional historical information and images. The hardcover book will be available later this month and offers readers an in-depth look at the architecture and history of Mackinac Island cottages. It was first published in 1981 by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, which has sold more than 20,000 copies.
"I'm pleased to have the opportunity to continue to share this story of Mackinac's summer cottages with Island visitors who are really fascinated by the summer homes," said Mr. Porter.
The Richard and Jane Manoogian Foundation paid for the design and production of the book, which will sell for $24.95.
Mr. Porter is the director of the Mackinac State Historic Parks and has written "Mackinac: An Island Famous in These Regions," "The Eagle at Mackinac: The Establishment of United States Military and Civil Authority on Mackinac Island, 1796-1802," "A Desirable Station, Soldier Life at Fort Mackinac, 1867-1895," and "Fudge: Mackinac's Sweet Souvenir."
He serves on the City of Cheboygan Historic Resources
Commission and is president of the Michigan Museums Association.
