NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND

Walking along Market Street, coming to the yard of Andrew and Stephanie McGreevy, you will immediately see the signs of spring as their tulips are in full bloom in a variety of colors. All those walking to Grand Hotel can enjoy their beauty.

 

Following the dark clouds and heavy rains of Saturday, May 20, the weather cleared later in the day. On Sunday, while much colder, the sun came out. Much traffic could be seen on Cadotte Avenue.

Happy birthday May 29 to Keith Leverton, head dock porter at the Iroquois Hotel. Have a great day.

Jordan Groseclose of Asheboro, North Carolina, is enjoying his first summer on Mackinac working with dockmaster Tom Bushman on the Star Line Dock.

Welcome home to Ann and Tim Timmons, who arrived Saturday, May 20, from their winter home in Palm City, Florida. Ann is feeling great since her recent surgery and is happy to be back on Mackinac, where they're comfortably settled in their cottage on Cadotte Avenue.

The Mackinac Island Medical Center has been a very busy facility the past week with numerous emergencies. It was interesting to read in the latest edition of the Town Crier how pleased one of the resident doctors was to find such a wonderful medical center on our Island. We're very proud of the medical center and its staff.

Clark Bloswick will celebrate his birthday May 29. I hope that Pal will get you something special.

A familiar sound could be heard in the distance Sunday morning, May 21. The bells at the historic Little Stone Church were inviting folks to the first Sunday service of 2006. Pastor Dr. Vincent Carroll and his wife, Molly, are settled in the comfortable vicarage. On the attractive iron gate to the entrance of their home is a bright hand-painted sign announcing their residence.

A very special lady, Camille Falcone, mother of Camille Bobinsky, will celebrate her 93rd birthday, May 27. Have a wonderful day.

Following the rain, everything on Mackinac is fresh and clean. The beautiful trees lining Cadotte Avenue on the Chambers property are blossoming out in spring splendor. In the very near future, we shall see the different varieties of lilacs. It has been very interesting to watch these same trees shed their autumn leaves and become bare. Next the healthy buds appear and soon the bright fragrant blossoms will decorate the Island.

Friends, please remember a great friend and young man, Adam Kiracofe, who underwent brain surgery Monday, May 22. Adam is the son of the Gary Kiracofes, owners of the Island Scrimshander shop in the Chippewa Hotel. Prayers are asked for his full recovery.

The friendly dray driver, Jim Pettit, will celebrate his birthday May 27. Have a great day, Jim.

The saddle horses are back at Cindy's and Jack's Livery and folks are enjoying riding up through the trails of our beautiful Island.

Stella Green Bodwin, daughter of Bertha Green and sister to Peggy Cowell, passed away during the winter and was laid to rest Saturday, May 13, in the Island cemetery. Deepest sympathy to Bertha and her family from Island friends. Happy birthday to Brian Horn May 27. Hope your day is special.

Grand Hotel's Woods Restaurant and The Jockey Club opened for the 2006 season Friday, May 19.

Deepest sympathy from Island friends to the Porcaro family of Weber's Floral on the recent death of their grandmother, Rose Porcaro.

It was a very busy weekend on the Island as more than 1,500 Zoo-de-Mackinac bike riders arrived for their annual spring gathering. The town was lively with activities.

A pleasant call was received this past week from Alice Myron of Port Huron, summer cottager of the East Bluff, who will be enjoying her Mackinac home over Memorial Day weekend. Alice is feeling great and can't wait to see all her Island friends.

Great to see Maryanne and Keith Hahn of Big Rapids back on Mackinac. They're helping their cousin, Bob Benjamin and his wife, Bev, open the Benjamin Shops for the season.

Walking past The Island House, one sees beds of white and yellow narcissus in full bloom plus a delightful yellow forsythia bush gracing the front lawn.

The new 2007 M.I.R.D. calendar is now available and is being sold in many shops. It is very attractive, with wonderful pictures of the Island.

Special happy birthday greetings May 30 to our good friend, Sally North of St. Ignace. Bushy says happy birthday.

A handsome new brick walkway is being installed between Main and Market streets in the city park. It's going to be a big improvement for everyone to enjoy.

The Michigan Knights of Columbus will be on Mackinac Thursday, May 25, for their annual convention at Grand Hotel.

Jessie's famous Chuckwagon Restaurant is open for the season, and many of her regular customers are delighted. Early each morning the smell of Jessie's fresh-brewed coffee permeates the air.

Happy birthday to Janis Wightman Early May 30. Enjoy your special day with Ginger.

Barry BeDour and his crew are working at Ann Bronfman's Lakewood Cottage.

The Garrity House on Market Street is looking mighty fine with its new coat of fresh white paint.

The Carriage House at the Iroquois Hotel opened for the season Monday, May 22.

Every Thursday at 6 p.m. there is a free meal for all the employees on Mackinac, at Ste. Anne's Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. Many people work hard to make this event possible.

A Memorial Day service will be held Monday, May 29, at 11:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in the city park. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Congratulations to Robert Chambers and Woody Beardsley, who qualified for the state track finals. They will be representing Mackinac Island Public School in Kingsford Saturday, June 3. Good luck to Robert and Woody.

John and Lois Findley have returned to Mackinac and have opened their Small Point Bed and Breakfast for the 2006 season. Nice to see you again.

Ollie and Patty Boynton of St. Ignace are once again working at Ste. Anne's. Nice to see you back on the Island.

Mike Corrigan spent a few days at his cottage on Mahoney Avenue.

Adele Lypsinmaa of Hancock spent the weekend on Mackinac. She worked a shift at the Mustang Lounge, where she saw all her friends. Hope to see you back on the Island again this summer.

Deanna and Glen St. Onge are back on Mackinac for the summer. Nice to have you back home.
