Work Begins on Concrete Walkway

The walkway that connects Main and Market streets and is adjacent to the public restrooms is being resurfaced with paver brick. Preparing the area by leveling the second layer of gravel is Rob Bowman, an employee with Maxwell Paving Stone of Harbor Springs. A one-inch layer of sand will be spread on top of the gravel before the bricks are set in place, said Tim Maxwell, owner of the company. The antique red concrete pavers are replacing the clay bricks and concrete that once covered the walkway. Each fall, the old clay bricks absorbed moisture and when the frost arrived, they expanded and fell apart, explained Mr. Maxwell. The new concrete pavers have less than a five percent moisture absorption rate, which should eliminate the problem. Depending on weather, the project is expected to be completed in approximately two weeks.
