New Signs Ready for French Lane

Frank Massaway, assistant city foreman, holds up one of the new signs that will be posted on French Lane. The signs reflect the city's new ordinance adopted during the Wednesday, May 24, council meeting, which prohibits horse traffic from entering the 10-foot-wide thoroughfare from Market or Main streets. Police Chief Bill Lenaghan said if an officer spots a violation to the traffic law, immediate action will be taken and a citation issued. Violators would be given a $110 fine for the civil infraction. Police will also investigate any citizen complaints. The new signs will be at the corner of French Lane and Market Street, French Lane and Main Street, and French Lane opposite the Squires Lane intersection. Squires Lane is the alley behind the Lake View Hotel that leads from Hoban Street. The only horse traffic allowed on French Lane would come from Squires Lane and would only be allowed to turn left. The signs will be posted at a height of eight feet for driver visibility.
