Durm, McPhee Vie for District Seat on Commission Nineteen candidates have filed for office in Mackinac County and will run in the Tuesday, August 8 election. They had until Tuesday, May 16, to file petitions and until May 19 to withdraw. County Clerk Mary Kay Tamlyn said ballot language is due by Tuesday, May 30, and county commissioners will certify the tax allocation language by Thursday, May 25. For county commissioners in District One, Newton Township Supervisor Bob Brotherton (R) of Gould City is running against incumbent Carl Frazier (D) of Naubinway. In District Two, incumbent Larry Leveille (D) of St. Ignace is running unopposed. For District Three, Molly Mathews (D) of Hessel will oppose incumbent Dawn Nelson (D) of St. Ignace. In District Four, Incumbent Jim Farero (R) of Cedarville is being challenged by Mike Patrick (R) of Cedarville. For District Five, Calvin McPhee (D) of St. Ignace will run against incumbent Joe Durm (D). Running for one St. Ignace City Council seat are Steve Dufresne, Paul Fullerton, and Steve Paquin. Three candidates will challenge incumbent John Duncan (R) of Cedarville for his Mackinac County Road Commission seat. They are Frank Luepnitz (D) of Moran, Richard Oliver (D) of St. Ignace, and Robert Smith (R) of Cedarville. Hudson Township Supervisor Al Garavaglia (D) of Naubinway is running unopposed for the position he was appointed to in August. Mr. Garavaglia filled the township supervisory post when it was vacated by Terry Gouza, whose term was set to expire this year. Two candidates running for 13 Precinct Delegate seats are Robert Winkelman (R) of St. Ignace and Kathryn Wells (R) of St. Ignace. There are 9,393 registered voters in Mackinac County: Bois Blanc Township 117, Brevort Township 567, Clark Township 1,728, Garfield Township 978, Hendricks Township 111, Hudson Township 161, Mackinac Island City 647, Marquette Township 392, Moran Township 912, Newton Township 339, Portage Township 716, St. Ignace City 2,047, and St. Ignace Township 678. |
