One hundred nine impounded bicycles were auctioned Saturday, May 27, on the steps of Community Hall at 10 a.m.
Most bicycles sold for $1 and $5, but others fetched a price as high as $65, with total sales adding $1,112 to the city's general fund. An additional $381.50 was made on the sale of bicycle licenses for the new purchases.
Mike Carley was the auctioneer.
The 141 bicycles offered for sale were in fair condition and some required some repair. State Trooper Jim Swain said the selection this year was not as good as it was last year.
The Mackinac Island Police Department plans another auction later this summer to sell the 32 left-over bikes and any new ones collected.
As of June 1, all bikes without current licenses will be impounded by the police. Bicycle licenses are available for $3.50 at the Mackinac Island Police Department Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
