Dehring To Head Jr. College Volleyball
By David Latva

Sarah Dehring
Sarah Dehring, a teacher and volleyball and track coach at Mackinac Island Public School, has accepted a coaching position at Arizona Western Junior College (AWJC) and will teach at an elementary school in Yuma.

Jason Smith, first-year head coach at AWJC, was the assistant coach at Ferris State University (FSU) while Ms. Dehring, who played two years at FSU, was a graduate assistant coach.

"Coach Smith offered me the coaching position at AWJC, but I needed a teaching job, and within a couple of weeks, I accepted a teaching job in the Yuma area," she said.

The 1999 alumnus of Mackinac Island Public School was a standout for the Lakers volleyball team and was graduated from Ferris in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

Yuma is in southwest Arizona, along the Colorado River that borders California and Mexico.

Ms. Dehring's last assignment for the Lakers track team was at the Upper Peninsula Finals, where Woody Beardsley competed in the discus and Robert Chambers ran the 200 meter dash Saturday, June 3, in Kingsford.

"I'm going to miss Mackinac Island and Michigan, but I'm excited about the new challenge in both coaching college volleyball and the new teaching position," Ms. Dehring said.
