NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND
BY JEANNETTE DOUD

Exciting news! The Weather Channel broadcast live from the front porch of Grand Hotel to celebrate the first day of summer Wednesday, June 21. The pictures from the longest porch in the world were breathtaking, as well as pictures of the Straits of Mackinac, Main Street with a surrey with the fringe on top, and tourists enjoying a vacation on the jewel of Michigan. What great publicity for the Island.

Greg and Sara Bunker Sutherland of Orlando, Florida, are enjoying a visit with their Island family, including parents Irene and Larry Rickley Sr., and brother and sister-in-law, Larry Jr. and Kathleen, with nephew, Anthony, and niece, Makayla Madison. It's a great family reunion. Nice to have you back on Mackinac.

We have some sad news to report. Friday, June 16, Stella and Robert Grzymala of the Detroit area were traveling to Mackinac to spend Father's Day with Stella's father, Leo Krzeminski. On I-75, by Indian River, they were in a terrible automobile accident. Roger was killed at the scene and Stella remains hospitalized at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Deepest sympathy is extended to the Grzymala and Krzeminski families from Island friends.

If by chance you meet Ed McGreevy, you will see a happy smile on his face. He just learned that his favorite ship on the Great Lakes, the Edward L. Ryerson, which has been in layup for a number of years, is being fitted out and will be passing by Mackinac in the next two weeks. It's a wonderful ship and we're all delighted that we will be seeing her on the lakes again. We also learned through Edward that our good friend, Jeff Gamble, who has been employed by Arnold Transit Company for many years, will be in the crew on the Edward L. Ryerson. We will miss Jeff on the Arnold Line, but wish him good luck in his new job.

Francis Dufina of Inverness, Florida, has been visiting family members on the Island. She has been taking many photographs and having interviews with Island residents, hoping to make a video of her favorite Island, where she was born. She is one of three daughters of the late Beth and Phil Dufina. Francis visited her brother, Dennis, in Alpena, where he is a golf pro. She and her brother recently won a golf tournament in Alpena.

Two-year-old Clara Hart Chambers and her 20-year-old brother, Richard, were guests of honor at a fun birthday party at the Pink Pony Monday, June 19. Everyone had a great time. Their parents, Mark and Jody,

hosted the party. Special guest was Father Rey Garcia from Ste. Anne's.

We had a very pleasant visit last week from Tom and Chris Hurst of Mesa, Arizona. Tom worked for several years at Grand Hotel, starting in 1967. He and his wife were married on Mackinac 34 years ago on May 27. After Tom left Mackinac, he became a pilot for Northwest Airline in 1979. Tom and Chris have a great love for Mackinac, and it was wonderful to see them again.

Bob Raisch of Star Cottage in Hubbard's Annex and his wife, Susie, enjoyed two weeks in Italy celebrating Susie's 75th birthday. Happy birthday, Susie, from Island friends. The Raischs were on hand for the dog and pony show on Windermere Point Saturday, June 17. Bob had built a fabulous little "Somewhere in Time" doghouse gazebo, which was auctioned off for a big price. Nice to see the Raischs back on Mackinac.

Guests of Phyllis Dunham at her cottage on French Lane are her son, Jamie, and wife, Marie, of Maryland. The little cottage dates back many years to Jamie's great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank King and his great-aunt, Stella King.

My favorite yellow rose tree in the front yard of the former Hildreth House on French Lane is in full bloom, and what a delight it gives to all who pass by. The yellow roses are exquisite and very fragrant. Loads of memories of days gone by, as it was planted by the late Stella King. The property is now owned by the Griffin and Karhoff families of Findlay, Ohio.

Special birthday greetings June 24 to Kitty Bourisaw Schadel of New York. Kitty is the sister of Bud Bourisaw. She spent many summers on Mackinac as our neighbor. We hope to see you on the Island this summer.

Next comes the fabulous garden of Dwight LaPine and Jeff Shaffer on French Lane. It is just beautiful and very picturesque. The red peonies are in full bloom as well as a wide variety of other blooming flowers. In front of their home on Market Street, they have a variegated lilac tree in full bloom in vibrant shades of lilac trimmed in white. It is so lovely, creating a conversation piece to all those passing by.

A very special Island lady, Candy Smith, will celebrate her birthday June 27. Candy, have a wonderful day.

Friday evening, June 16, fire tones could be heard over our scanners. A working structure fire was reported at the Cable Cottage on Lakeshore Drive. Mary Cable's niece, Jane Winston, along with houseguests, was staying at the cottage. The ladies were having dinner at The Gate House when they learned that the cottage was on fire. Fortunately, through the quick response of our dedicated fire department, the lovely old home was saved. It was an excellent response from the fire department, police department, and EMT's. Special recognition to fire cadets Ben Mosley Jr. and Robert Chambers for helping during the fire, and to James Kevin Bynoe for taking care of Station #1. All of these dedicated people always respond when duty calls.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the David Levy family on the recent death of Ann Levy's mother Sunday, June 18. Island friends send their sincere condolences.

Greetings to Jeff Shaffer's parents, who are back in their home in Gwinn following a visit to Mayo Clinic.

Virginia and Dan Riordan of Marietta, Georgia, returned to their home on Market Street last Friday. Jordan Groseclose, grandson of Eileen McIntyre Groseclose and nephew of Virginia, is staying with the family as he is employed for the summer at the Star Line Dock. He is from Asheboro, North Carolina.

I just learned of the death of Nancy Williams Gram, former First Lady of Michigan. She was a lovely lady, who had a special love for Mackinac. Sincere sympathy is extended to her family.

Brother Jim Boynton, S.J. of Detroit is back at Ste. Anne's for the summer months, and as usual he is full of pep as he assists Father Rey.

The beauty of the Island marina is a breathtaking sight with such a variety of beautiful yachts.

Helga Doud's home on Lakeshore Drive was as busy as could be as family members arrived for the lilac weekend. Anna Mary and Gary Cusack were here from Petoskey. They brought along Helga's granddaughters, great-grandchildren, and friends, who were enjoying the freedom of riding bicycles on Mackinac. Great-grandsons Franc and James were also here from St. Clair Shores. Everyone had a great time.

Attorney and Mrs. Dan Hesslin of Manistee made their annual lilac visit to the Windermere and enjoyed viewing the lilac parade from the hotel veranda.

An open house was held at the Mackinac Island Public School Saturday, June 17, for retiring superintendent of schools Jack Dehring. He is retiring after devoting 34 years of his life to the education of Mackinac's young men and women. He is loved by all his students, who call him "Mr. D." Now Jack can devote his time and energy to playing his favorite game, golf. We wish Jack and his family, Dorothy, Jack III, and Sarah, many years of good health and happiness.

At the reception for Jack Dehring, it was great to see Marilyn McCready looking so good. Wayne and Joan Zwolinski came from Petoskey to join in the festivities. Bill Krieger, former superintendent of the Mackinac Island Public School, who hired Jack 34 years ago, came from his home in Wisconsin to wish Jack well on his retirement. Many other teachers who had taught with Jack also joined the party. It was a wonderful gathering.

Dr. Jay Klein and family from Traverse City visited the Island over the lilac weekend. They were guests of Bud Bourisaw and Sherry Rayha. Eddie and Janice Kruger of Cheboygan, friends of Bud and Sherry, enjoyed the weekend and the lilac parade.

Michigan State Trooper Joe Brodeur, along with his wife, Rosie, and children, Hanna and Madison, from Chelsea, visited Mackinac over the lilac weekend.

Michele Viviano, former taxi driver Number 8, spent the weekend on Mackinac visiting friends.

The lilac parade went on as usual in spite of the raindrops. The bands were great, and very creative floats were enjoyed by all the viewers. Lilac Queen Melissa Bunker and her court were true royalty on their beautiful float. The horses pranced, bands performed, and Dynamite the Clown thrilled the crowd. It was a great parade.

Al Colegrove of St. Ignace enjoyed the lilac parade Sunday, June 18.

The Scottville Clown Band was wonderful. When they march through town, they liven up the crowd. After the parade they held a concert on Windermere Point. Little Clara Chambers loved every minute of the music and danced for an hour. At the end of the concert, the band sang "Happy Birthday" to her. It was a wonderful way to end the day.

The George Goodmans of Ann Arbor are settled into their lovely Victorian condominium in the Mission. It's always nice to see you back on Mackinac.

We had a wonderful visit on Monday from Stafford Smith and his wife from Petoskey and Bayview. They were visiting the Island with their grandchildren. So nice to see you on Mackinac.

Attending the burial of Mary Milton Saturday, June 24, will be the three brothers of her late husband, Robert, and their wives. They are Clare and Betty Milton of Baltimore, Maryland, Kirby and Kaye Milton of Rochester, New York, and Thornton and Lilo Milton of Houston, Texas. The burial service will be at 11 a.m. at the Mackinac Island Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club from noon to 2 p.m. Also attending will be her two surviving children, David Milton and Suzi Padilla, and their families, and children of her deceased daughter, Gill.

The new brick walkway in the city park is very attractive and a wonderful improvement. It will be enjoyed by many people.

Wednesday, June 21, was both a sad and happy day as the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw made her last trip through the Straits of Mackinac. She is such a beautiful ship, so graceful and majestic. Many people could be seen standing on deck as she passed Windermere Point. Among the passengers were Clark, John Chris, and Chris Bloswick Jr., Robert McGreevy, Shane Therrian, and Mike Bradley. What a thrilling trip. As she passed the Island on her final trip, all the Island ferries gave her a salute. It was sad, but we're happy that she will be in Mackinaw City. The Mackinaw had a very distinguished career and deserves to be honored.

Enjoy the first week of summer.
