NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND
BY JEANNETTE DOUD

As you walk around Mackinac you see the American flag displayed everywhere, lampposts, homes, businesses, flying high above historic City Hall, on the hill of history at Fort Mackinac, and across the front of Grand Hotel. The Island is getting ready to celebrate the Fourth of July with children's games, concerts, picnics, and fireworks. It will be a fun-filled day for everyone.

Cecelia Donnelly Flanagan will celebrate her 99th birthday July 4. She was born on Mackinac in the William Donnelly residence on historic Market Street. She has a great memory and is an authority on Island history. Cecelia and her daughter, Kay Hoppenrath, live in their comfortable home on Market Street. Wednesday, June 21, the City of Mackinac Island honored Cecelia with a resolution depicting her life on Mackinac. Cecelia taught school when it was at the old Indian Dormitory. We wish her much happiness and good health. Please remember Cecelia on her special day.

I would like to remember Nancy Williams Gram when her husband, "Soapy," was governor of Michigan and they occupied the residence at the top of Fort Hill with its marvelous view. The Williams were overjoyed living on Mackinac, where they mingled with Island residents. Soapy was known for his famous square dances, where he was the caller. The Williams later purchased the beautiful home on the West Bluff now owned by Richard and Jane Manoogian. Nancy enjoyed needlepointing and in the wonderful spacious dining room of the cottage were cushions depicting Island scenes that she had done for each chair. I have one very happy memory of Nancy. At Christmas two years ago, she wrote me a letter saying how much she enjoyed the Island news, which brought to her many happy memories of her days on Mackinac. She ended the note saying, "I hope to return to Mackinac one day, where I will lie next to my husband, Soapy Williams, governor of Michigan." She will come home to Mackinac in September. Deepest sympathy to the family from Island friends.

Dan and Marlee Musser hosted a tour of their home in Hubbard's Annex as part of the annual G. Mennen Williams dinner held at Grand Hotel Saturday, June 24.
The staff at the Mackinac Island Medical Center were all called into action this past week for many emergencies. One day there were three emergencies back to back. While the EMTs were taking care of the first two patients, the fire squad truck had to respond to the third run. Dan Wightman, Smi Horn, and Jason St. Onge of the Mackinac Island Fire Department assisted the EMTs. When duty calls, everyone responds.

Aileen Koehler entertained friends at a Grand Hotel cocktail party Saturday, June 24, during her annual visit to Mackinac from her home in Solana Beach, California. The formerWest Bluff cottager is the niece of Alicia Poole, one-time owner of the Iroquois Hotel. Joining her on the Grand porch are (standing, from left) Vickie Harris of Salona Beach and Nickie Croghan of Boston, and, seated, Marie Otto of Fountain Valley, California, Mrs. Koehler, Pam Chamberlain of Boston, and Lorna Straus of the Annex.
Jennie and Jason St. Onge have moved into their new home at Stonecliffe Manor. I'm sure that Carmella will love her new yard.

Some of the ducks that I fed all winter decided to make their nest in one of the Cloghaun flower gardens. A week ago, Marti Carey, manager at Cloghaun, had to stop traffic on Market and Hoban streets so that mother duck and her 10 little ones could cross the street and head down to the lake. It was quite a parade. Mother Nature is great.

With the cooler temperatures, the gardens around the Island are just beautiful. They're so colorful and healthy. They should be spectacular this summer.

Peggy Bynoe left Thursday to play piano for a friend's wedding in Ohio.

Elaine Bila of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is visiting her sister, Rosemary Kompsi. Nice to see you back on Mackinac.

Jody Chambers will celebrate her birthday July 1. I'm sure that Clara and Olivia will help you blow out your candles.

Best wishes to Lois Lenaghan, who recently underwent knee surgery. Lois is back home and recuperating well.

Bonnie and Emmett Schoenborn of Grand Rapids are visiting Patty, Brian, and Lillian Rose Schoenborn on Mackinac. Nice to see you again.

The Mackinac Island Fire Department will host children's games on Windermere Point for the Fourth of July. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun.

Happy birthday to Joann Bagbey and her mother, Bette Emmons, July 3. Enjoy your day.

Best wishes to Jim Droskie of St. Ignace, who recently returned from the University of Michigan Hospital. Island friends send special greetings.

Emma Chambers and friends spent the weekend in Lansing registering for college classes.

Mark and Jody Chambers are enjoying their new sailboat named the Windermere. It's a very sleeklooking yacht with a nice cabin. I'm sure the family will have fun sailing this summer.

The fireworks will be fired from a barge in the Straits of Mackinac Tuesday evening, July 4. Everyone will see a beautiful display.

Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m., on the deck at Ste. Anne's Church, a square dance is held. John Findley from Small Point is the caller. The spirit is lively and everyone has a good time.

Happy belated birthday to Tom Pfeiffelmann June 22. I hope your day was special.

Peggy Bynoe and Carolyn, Heather, and Marvin Lee May enjoy ballroom dancing at Grand Hotel every Saturday evening at the beautiful Terrace Room in the hotel.

Janet and Jay Stingel of North Carolina are enjoying their Brigadoon Cottage overlooking the Straits of Mackinac and the marina filled with beautiful boats.

Sunday, June 25, was a perfect Mackinac day for Wendy and Mike Young and the Friends of the Mackinac Island Medical Center to host a delightful cocktail reception at their lovely cottage on the West Bluff. The view was magnificent and it was a delightful event.

Aileen Koehler of Solana Beach, California, hosted a cocktail reception on the porch of Grand Hotel Saturday, June 24. Her many Mackinac friends were delighted to see her. Aileen and her late husband, Larry, were the owners of the West Bluff cottage now owned by John and Penny Barr. She is also a niece to the late A. Alicia Poole, former owner of the Iroquois Hotel. So nice to have Aileen back on Mackinac.

It's nice to see Nancy Keogh out and about after her recent fall. She is recovering very well.

The G. Mennen Williams dinner was held at Grand Hotel Saturday, June 24. The evening started with a reception and tour of Dan and Marlee Musser's home in Hubbard's Annex, followed by dinner in the Terrace Room. The event was very well attended.

While crossing from Mackinaw City last Wednesday, what came into view but the stately ice crusher Mackinaw, which was moored at the dock. We shall all miss seeing the beautiful ship pass through the Straits of Mackinac on a bright winter's day.

Friends, please remember Island-born Marilyn O'Brien Wilkins of St. Ignace with cards. She underwent major surgery at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor Wednesday, June 28. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Suzanne Munger of West Carrollton, Ohio, visited with Island and St. Ignace friends before leaving for home. She will join her sister, Linda, and husband for a scenic cruise to Alaska. Have a great time.

Captain Paul Allers of Mackinaw City visited his good friend Dick Bagbey on Tuesday. Captain Paul is looking forward to a two-week trip on a tug with his friend, Captain John Wellington of Sault Ste. Marie.

Skip Harrell of Bloomington, Indiana, joined his sister, Jane Winston, on the Island for a visit. They're making arrangements to have the damage done by the recent fire at the Cable Cottage repaired.

It's Wednesday evening, June 28, and thunder can be heard in the distance. We hope that we don't get the hail storm, which would destroy all the beautiful flowers recently planted in gardens all over the Island.

Lorabeth and John Fitzgerald, East Bluff cottagers from Grand Ledge, recently arrived at their Island cottage. John became ill on Monday and was transported to Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace, where he remains a patient. Best wishes to John from Island friends. Emily Fullerton of St. Ignace is a niece of the Fitzgeralds, and she and her husband, Paul, visit the hospital often.

Saturday, June 24, at 11 a.m., family and friends gathered at the Milton lot in the Island Cemetery to bid farewell to Mary Milton, who died this past winter in Dearborn.

The Mackinac brilliant sun cast its beam on the earth below as Mary was laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Dr. Robert, and daughter, Gill. Father Jim Williams celebrated the graveside service. Mary loved Mackinac, and was often seen riding her prancing horse through the wooded trails. A reception followed the service at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club.

Lorna and Dr. Fran Straus of Chicago have arrived for the summer and are settled into their cottage in Hubbard's Annex. Their daughter, Dr. Helen, and son, Frank, have joined their parents for a vacation.

Jeannie Cusack Hayes and family of Basalt, Colorado, are visiting Mackinac and staying in the home of her late grandmother, Loretta Dennany, at the Mission.

They've been joined by Jeannie's parents, Anna Mary and Gary Cusack of Petoskey. Jeannie is also visiting her greatgrandmother, Helga Doud.

Tuesday, June 27, Len Trankina celebrated his 70th birthday. Best wishes from Island friends.

Happy Fourth of July!!
