Island Prepares for Independence Day

Children's games, fireworks, and stoneskipping will mark Independence Day festivities on Mackinac Island Tuesday, July 4. The celebration here is even more meaningful because the city was established as a direct result of the American Revolution. In 1780-81, British forces moved Fort Mackinac from the mainland to the east bluff to better protect the Straits of Mackinac from American forces in the south. The civilian population followed and built a new town below the fort, where Market Street is today.
So Fort Mackinac, while a British fortress, stands today as a symbol of the Revolution and of the colonial declaration of independence in 1776. Its stone walls are the oldest surviving structure in Michigan.
Fourth of July activities get underway Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the 43rd Annual Stoneskipping Tournament on the beach of the Iroquois Hotel. Stoneskippers of all ages and abilities can test their skills. For $3, six approved stones can be purchased. For the Stoneskipping ProAm, Guinness Book of World Records holder in stoneskipping, Kirk "Mountain Man" Steiner of Pennsylvania, John "Skippy" Kolar of Michigan, and Todd "Mussels" Callewaert of Mackinac Island, will competing in the event.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Red, White, and Blue Bike Decorating Contest will take place. Anew event this year, free decorations will be available on the lawn across from Lake Side Market at Mission Point Resort.
From Noon to 3 p.m., the Mackinac Island Fire Department will host its Old-fashioned Fourth. A water balloon toss, sack races, and greased pole climb will take place on Windermere Point.
From 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Great Kite Ascension will be held at Windermere Point, conducted by the staff of Great Turtle Toys.
