Fire Department Responds to Emergency Call, Extinguishes Porch Fire at Cable Cottage

Firemen entered Cable Cottage, home of Jane Winston, in the evening on Friday, June16, to control a porch fire that started with smoking materials.
A porch fire at Cable Cottage at the corner of Market and Main streets was extinguished by the Mackinac Island Fire Department Friday, June 16. Fire Chief Dennis Bardley said the cause "appeared to be careless handling of smoking materials."

No one was inside the house at the time of the fire, which was reported at 7:45 p.m. by a passerby who noticed smoke coming from the porch. Three engines and two support units responded, and water hoses and a chain saw were used to get at and extinguish the fire.

EMS were placed on stand-by while Mackinac Island Police organized traffic control.

There was relatively minor structural damage to the house, including some broken windows

and removed ceiling boards, said Chief Bradley, as the fire was contained to the enclosed porch area.

Cable Cottage is the home of Jane Winston.
