Anew event for July 4 was bike decorating at Mission Point Resort, where children of all ages were able to decorate their bicycles with flags and streamers in patriotic colors.
The first 75 children received a free bicycle helmet, donated by the Field Neurosciences Institute of St. Mary's Hospital. The institute operates a program called, "Caught Being Safe," in which the Mackinac Island Police Department participates.
Children "caught" wearing a helmet by a police officer receive a reflective sticker and free ice cream cone at McDonald's.
