NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND
The town became lively as all the yachts were moored at the marina and the Arnold Dock. The yacht owned by Doug DeVos was the first to cross the finish line Sunday afternoon. It was a very fast race. The boats enjoyed a very strong wind. Wednesday, July 19, Father Jim Williams of Mackinaw City, and pastor of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in St. Ignace, was appointed to the Mackinac Island State Park Commission by Governor Jennifer Granholm. Congratulations and best wishes. We're sending warmest and best wishes to a great friend, Henry Dombroski of Cheboygan, father of Dennis Dombroski, Island building inspector, who is recuperating from major surgery at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Mr. Dombroski raises beautiful Christmas trees. The last two years, he has donated the city tree, which stands proudly on Main Street gaily lighted for the season. Island friends send get well greetings. Happy belated birthday July 5 to Jennifer Putnam. Hope you had a great day. Kelly Bean celebrated her birthday July 13. Her good friend, Jackie Bradley, baked a birthday cake and brought all her day-care children to City Hall singing "Happy Birthday" to Kelly. Kelly was surprised and thrilled. Gordon and Connie Maynard of Clearwater, Florida, are spending two weeks at the family's East Bluff cottage with Gordon's sister, Alice Myron, and niece, Susan. It's Wednesday, July 19, a perfectly beautiful bright sunny Mackinac day. Many visitors are here visiting our magical Island in all its summer beauty. We did receive some much needed rain over the past few days when the sky darkened and heavy rain fell Monday, July 17. Now the lawns all over the Island are greener and the flower gardens are magnificent. Congratulations and best wishes to Bud and Ada Chambers of St. Ignace and Mackinac, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Friday, July 14. Hope you had a wonderful day. Happy belated birthday to Sidney Rae Klienhenz July 11. Sidney is the granddaughter of Annette and Bob Gillespie. It was so nice to see my good friend, Charlotte Sweeney Schmitt, who with her daughter, Muffin Ernster, visited her lovely home in Hubbard's Annex. Charlotte lives in Bur Ridge, Illinois, and attends horse shows with Muffy. Randy and Michelle Stuck, cottagers of the West Bluff, are enjoying their very attractive cottage. Their photograph appeared on the front page of Mackinac Living, a picture of them in their fancy carriage with their beautiful horses. Happy belated birthday greetings July 9 to Ann Hart, who has moved from France to Berne, New York. We look forward to seeing you on Mackinac soon. Family and friends of the late Roger Grzymala gathered at Ste. Anne's for a memorial mass celebrated by Father Rey Garcia, S.J. Roger, the husband of Stella Krzeminski, was killed in a tragic automobile accident while he and his wife were coming to Mackinac to celebrate Father's Day with Stella's dad, Leo. Dan Seeley was the organist and Trish Martin was the soloist. Aluncheon followed in the church hall. Deepest sympathy to the family from Island friends. Happy belated birthday to Gloria St. Onge Borland July 12. I hope your day was special. The personnel at the Windermere Hotel and the Windermere Dog House were very pleased to receive a visit on Tuesday from Larry LaPine, longtime dedicated employee of the hotel. Larry was brought over to see his many friends by a lady from the long term care facility in St. Ignace. Larry is now confined to a wheelchair, but has a tremendous spirit. He was so happy to go to the Dog House and get his favorite hot dogs. He was thrilled to see all his friends. He shares a room at the facility with his brother, Gary. So good to see Larry back on the Island. Happy birthday to Ken Sawatzki of Lansing July 15. Ken is Jill's father and he has many friends on Mackinac. Jill will celebrate her birthday July 28. The Armours hope to return later in the summer. Mackinac mourns the loss of the late Judge John Fitzgerald, summer cottager of the East Bluff, who passed away Friday, July 7. The Fitzgerald's love for the Island brought them home to Mackinac each summer, along with their three sons. Their cottage has a magnificent view of the Straits of Mackinac as seen from their front veranda. Island friends send deepest sympathy to the family. Happy birthday July 25 to Ellen Putnam. I hope you have a great day. John Chambers, husband of the former Beth Ball, has joined the Four Square Financial Group of Grand Rapids. Island friends send congratulations to John. The City of Mackinac, at the council meeting Wednesday, July 19, honored two retiring firemen and one EMT, who is on a sabbatical. Clark Bloswick devoted 17 years to the department and George Wellington served for more than 40 years. Nona Tacey Chambers was the senior emergency medical technician for 17 years. This is true dedication. Each of the honorees were presented with a resolution from the city and Chief Dennis Bradley gave each fireman a clock with an engraved plaque. Nona was presented with a plaque from Mark Wilk of Allied EMS. These people make Mackinac the special place that it is. A very special lady in St. Ignace, Pam St. Onge, will be celebrating her birthday July 21. Her many friends on Mackinac wish her a very happy birthday. The flowers around the Veteran's Memorial and City Hall are just beautiful and so colorful. The hanging baskets from the city lampposts are exquisite under the care of Dick Bolander and Joe Porcaro.
