Island Has More Severe Problems Than Just Rabbits
To The Editor:

I think it is very important here on the Island to see wildlife. We do not have an overabundance of wild animals to be enjoyed and seen by tourists, children, and local residents.

The writer of the article [Mackinac Island's Growing Problem: Interloping Rabbits, July 8 issue] has heard many stories of our "growing" problem with the rabbits, however, I happen to purchase gourmet rabbit food and enjoy feeding the rabbits all year round. It is soothing to watch them also enjoy our Island. Although they do consume some of my plants and vegetables, it is worth the loss to view nature on a daily basis. There are many more severe problems that should be addressed, such as our dog situation.

Although I am a lover of dogs, when off-Island dogs come to visit, they could be carrying diseases and illnesses to our year-around canines that no one could have any knowledge about. It also creates many problems when the visiting dog owners do not pick up their pet's feces and dispose of it properly, thus leaving a potential hazard for children and animals alike.

Thank you for your time and allowing me to give my opinion.
