French Lane Ordinance Needs Amendment
To the Editor:

My name is Phyllis Dunham. I live on a beautiful part of Mackinac Island called French Lane, along with five other houses. We all pay taxes to the city. Due to an ordinance recently enacted, I cannot get any delivery by horses. I cannot get a taxi pickup at my home, nor can I get groceries delivered or material to do any project I may want to do at my home to keep it presentable to the community or outsiders who visit our wonderful Island.

And yet horses come up and down the Lane at will. There are carriages belonging to several companies here. If this ordinance applies to me, why doesn't it to others? Why are these people not being ticketed for their infractions of a city ordinance? The city always talks about needing money. In other cities, they issue tickets to control these things and to make money.

It isn't a matter of putting up signs, it's a matter of enforcing the law. I do a lot of walking around the Island and I see ordinances disobeyed all the time. Let's have some action against wrong doers.

This ordinance, however, should NOT be rescinded because of safety factors for the public. We need an amendment to allow pickups and deliveries, only, on French Lane.
