Let's Keep Mackinac Costs Reasonable for Everyone As an annual visitor to the Island, I can't help but notice the continual decline in the number of tourists. Could it be that you have priced yourself out of business? The Island, in my opinion, is not a "playground for the rich and famous" but rather is an ideal setting for families, couples, bikers, hikers, bird watchers, and conferences. Consider, however, the cost to a family of three people who want to spend the day on the Island. Ferry fees of $47, a carriage tour at $46, rental of bikes $36 (plus a $75 deposit), Fort tickets at $25, and food at least $85 for a conservative total of around $240 for one day. If they were to stay overnight, you can add another $125. This does not include any souvenirs or shopping, which may be why your merchants are doing so poorly. Is it better to continue these skyrocketing prices and watch one business after another leave, only to have a new owner full of enthusiasm face the same loss, or come back to reality? The money-making '90s are over, and you will probably not see them again for another 30 years. In the meantime, how about letting everyone enjoy the Island at reasonable prices?
